Once, long ago, Theo Maehr hiked his favorite loop trail up Mount Lafayette in New Hampshire. In a sheltered place out of the wind, as he sat and gazed at the beautiful landscape, he received this clear message from the mountain: “If you want to know silence, remember me.” He was surprised and excited and quieted, all at once.

During the rest of that day in the mountains, Theo experienced a heightened awareness of and connection with his surroundings. He received quiet whispers from a stream, a chickadee, a grove of birch trees. Wild Whispers, a children’s book about the wise messages we can receive from the world around us if we are quiet enough to listen and hear, is the result of that experience.

AFTER THE BIG SUR FIRE
In July 2016 the Soberanes Fire started just south of Carmel and swept through Big Sur, devastating the Palo Colorado area where Theo lives. Because of his years of diligent work on his property, he was actually able to protect his house and outbuildings from the fire. It is an amazing affirmation of Theo's belief that many homes can indeed be protected from fire if we maintain defensible spaces around them.
